Rescuing Candide
As You Like It
Birmingham Repertory Theatre
The Observer
…Its Edinburgh stable-mate is As You Like It, performed on the same set gone green. Costumes are Regency-to-Watteau, the ladies’ hats contriving to obscure large portions of the action. David Rintoul is a virile Orlando; Lynn Dearth as Rosalind begins and ends in ravishing solemnity, but jumps about inordinately between times. Mr Grace performs relentlessly as Touchstone, never allowing the clown a moment off duty, but since the production makes nonsense of his relation with Audrey (Miss McAuliffe amusing again) he may have had no choice. The senior gentlemen are uniformly reliable.
